Overview

This combination therapy is a neoadjuvant regimen being investigated for the treatment of resectable Stage II-IIIB non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It consists of the programmed death-1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitor nivolumab, a chemotherapy doublet of nab-paclitaxel and carboplatin, and the probiotic BiFico (Bifidobacterium Triple Viable). BiFico is a live biotherapeutic product containing three specific bacterial strains: *Bifidobacterium longum*, *Lactobacillus acidophilus*, and *Enterococcus faecalis*. The rationale for this combination is based on the emerging understanding that the gut microbiota can significantly influence the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. By modulating the microbiome with BiFico, the regimen aims to enhance systemic anti-tumor immunity and improve the pathological complete response (pCR) rate in patients undergoing surgery for NSCLC.
