This therapeutic approach involves the infusion of natural killer (NK) cells in combination with monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of hematological malignancies, specifically relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). NK cells are innate immune effector cells capable of direct tumor lysis. The addition of monoclonal antibodies is intended to enhance the anti-tumor response through antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). In this mechanism, the antibodies bind to tumor-associated antigens, and the NK cells recognize the Fc portion of these antibodies via their CD16 (FcγRIIIa) receptors, leading to targeted cell death. This specific protocol is being evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by Zhejiang University to improve outcomes in patients who have failed standard therapies.
