Overview

The non-adjuvanted A(H1N1)v influenza vaccine refers to a category of monovalent vaccines developed specifically to combat the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic (A(H1N1)pdm09). These vaccines were formulated without the oil-in-water emulsion adjuvants (such as AS03 or MF59) that were used in other pandemic vaccines like Pandemrix or Focetria to enhance immune response and conserve antigen supply. Non-adjuvanted formulations, such as Sanofi Pasteur's Panenza and CSL's Panvax, were typically inactivated split-virion or whole-virion preparations containing the A/California/07/2009 (H1N1)v-like strain. They were often preferred for specific populations, including pregnant women and individuals with certain immunodeficiencies, due to a more traditional safety profile and lower reactogenicity compared to adjuvanted versions. The vaccine works by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins, providing protection against infection and severe disease.
