Overview

Norepinephrine + albumin is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), a form of impaired kidney function occurring in individuals with advanced liver disease. Norepinephrine is a potent vasopressor that acts as an agonist at alpha-1, alpha-2, and beta-1 adrenergic receptors, leading to systemic vasoconstriction and an increase in mean arterial pressure, which helps reverse the splanchnic vasodilation and subsequent renal hypoperfusion seen in HRS. Human albumin is administered alongside norepinephrine to expand plasma volume, increase oncotic pressure, and potentially provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This combination is often compared to terlipressin as a more cost-effective or alternative treatment strategy in clinical settings, particularly in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure.
