Overview

Norepinephrine + dopamine refers to the combination of two endogenous catecholamine neurotransmitters and hormones, both of which are also used as pharmaceutical agents, primarily in critical care settings. Norepinephrine (noradrenaline) acts mainly as a potent vasoconstrictor via alpha-adrenergic receptor agonism, increasing blood pressure with minimal effect on heart rate at standard doses. Dopamine is a precursor to norepinephrine and exerts dose-dependent effects; at low doses it stimulates dopaminergic receptors (vasodilation in renal/splanchnic beds), at moderate doses it stimulates beta-1 adrenergic receptors (increasing cardiac contractility and heart rate), and at high doses it activates alpha-adrenergic receptors (vasoconstriction). Both drugs are used intravenously for acute management of shock states such as septic shock or cardiogenic shock to support blood pressure and organ perfusion[8][6]. They act through different but overlapping mechanisms on adrenergic receptors.
