Overview

Norepinephrine + phenylephrine is a combination of two sympathomimetic vasopressors used primarily in critical care settings to manage hypotension, especially in cases such as septic shock. Norepinephrine acts as an agonist at both alpha-1 and beta-1 adrenergic receptors, leading to vasoconstriction and increased cardiac output. Phenylephrine is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist that causes vasoconstriction with minimal direct effect on the heart. The combination aims to increase systemic vascular resistance and maintain adequate blood pressure during severe hypotensive states. However, clinical studies suggest that this combination may be associated with higher mortality compared to norepinephrine alone in patients with septic shock[1]. Both agents are administered intravenously in acute care settings.
