Overview
Norgestrel + ethinyl estradiol is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing two synthetic hormones: norgestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). This combination prevents pregnancy through multiple mechanisms: stopping ovulation, changing cervical mucus to block sperm movement, and altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. This medication is available in different formulations, with the most common being 0.3 mg norgestrel/30 mcg ethinyl estradiol (Cryselle, Elinest, Low-Ogestrel) and 0.5 mg norgestrel/50 mcg ethinyl estradiol (Ogestrel). It's typically taken as one active tablet daily for 21 days, followed by 7 days of placebo tablets or no tablets.
