Overview

This is a combination of norepinephrine (a potent vasopressor and sympathomimetic amine) diluted in normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride solution). Norepinephrine acts primarily as an agonist at alpha-adrenergic receptors, causing peripheral vasoconstriction and raising blood pressure, with some beta-adrenergic activity leading to increased cardiac contractility. Normal saline serves as the vehicle for intravenous infusion, providing isotonicity and volume expansion. This combination is used intravenously to treat severe acute hypotension or shock states by restoring vascular tone and supporting organ perfusion[1][2][4][6]. Norepinephrine in normal saline is commonly prepared in hospital settings for continuous IV infusion.
