Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Novo Helisen Depot and Phostal represent two distinct lines of allergen extracts used for subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT), also known as allergy shots. They are not co-formulated into a single product but are used for the same purpose: to treat Type 1 IgE-mediated allergies such as allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic bronchial asthma. [3, 4, 10] * **Novo Helisen Depot**, manufactured by Allergopharma (a part of Dermapharm), contains native, non-modified allergen extracts (e.g., from house dust mites, pollen, or animal dander) adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide. [1, 3, 4] This creates a depot effect for sustained release, which can help improve tolerability. [1] * **Phostal**, manufactured by Stallergenes Greer, typically contains chemically modified allergen extracts known as allergoids. [10, 21] This modification reduces the allergenicity of the proteins to decrease the risk of side effects while retaining the immunogenicity needed for the treatment to be effective. [17, 21] Phostal often uses calcium phosphate as an adjuvant. [10] Both treatments work by gradually desensitizing the immune system through repeated administration of increasing doses of the specific allergen, aiming to induce long-term immunological tolerance. [4, 21]
