Overview

NAs + IFN-α is a combination drug regimen consisting of nucleoside/nucleotide analogs (NAs) and interferon alpha (IFN-α), primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The NAs component (such as lamivudine, entecavir, or tenofovir) targets the hepatitis B virus (HBV) by inhibiting the viral DNA polymerase/reverse transcriptase, thereby suppressing viral replication. The IFN-α component (which may include standard or pegylated forms) is an immunomodulatory biologic that stimulates the host's innate and adaptive immune responses against HBV while also exerting direct antiviral effects. This combination is frequently investigated in pediatric populations (aged 1–16 years) with the goal of achieving a 'functional cure,' characterized by the clearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Clinical trials, such as those sponsored by the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital, utilize response-guided treatment (RGT) protocols to optimize efficacy.
