Overview

Nutmeg extract (referred to as NEMM in clinical studies) is an investigational topical botanical preparation developed by researchers at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, for the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN). The formulation is a complex mixture consisting of nutmeg oil (14%), mace oil (2%), methyl salicylate (6%), menthol (6%), and coconut oil. It was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine its efficacy in alleviating neuropathic pain. The study concluded that the addition of nutmeg and mace oils to a base containing menthol and methyl salicylate did not provide significant clinical improvements beyond those observed with the control preparation alone over a 4-week treatment period.
