The combination "octenidine + 1-propanol + 2-propanol" is an antiseptic formulation containing octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT), 1-propanol, and 2-propanol. Octenidine dihydrochloride is a cationic surfactant with a gemini-surfactant structure derived from 4-aminopyridine. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. **Mechanism of Action** Octenidine works by binding to the bacterial surface and penetrating through the lipopolysaccharide layer in gram-negative bacteria. It interacts with fatty acyl chain regions of the outer membrane, causing lipid disorder that leads to bacterial cell lysis. For gram-positive bacteria, it similarly induces membrane disorders. The combination with propanol (both 1-propanol and 2-propanol) likely enhances the antiseptic properties, as alcohols are known to denature proteins and disrupt cell membranes of microorganisms.
