Overview

Elmex Fluid is a topically applied dental fluoride solution containing a combination of amine fluorides, specifically olaflur (0.925%) and dectaflur (0.075%). Developed by GABA GmbH (a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive), it is designed for the prevention and treatment of dental caries and the remineralization of early-stage (incipient) carious lesions. The solution contains 1% amine fluoride, providing a high concentration of 10,000 ppm fluoride ions. Its mechanism of action involves the incorporation of fluoride ions into the tooth enamel's hydroxyapatite structure to form fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution. Amine fluorides are noted for their surface-active properties, which facilitate the formation of a stable calcium fluoride-like layer on the tooth surface and enhance fluoride uptake in the deeper layers of demineralized enamel compared to inorganic fluorides like sodium fluoride.
