Overview

OLIMEL and PeriOLIMEL are a range of triple-chamber bags for parenteral nutrition developed by Baxter. These products provide a complete nutritional regimen for adult patients who cannot receive adequate nutrition through oral or enteral routes. Each bag contains three separate compartments: one with a solution of L-series amino acids (with or without electrolytes), one with a glucose (dextrose) solution, and one with a lipid emulsion. The lipid component is a unique 80:20 mixture of refined olive oil and refined soybean oil, providing a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. OLIMEL formulations are designed for central venous administration due to their high osmolarity, while PeriOLIMEL is formulated with a lower osmolarity suitable for peripheral or central venous infusion. They are used to maintain nitrogen and energy balance and to prevent essential fatty acid deficiency in patients with conditions such as postsurgical fasting or severe malnutrition.
