Drug intelligence / Profile preview
OM-85 (Broncho-Vaxom) is an orally administered bacterial lysate developed by OM Pharma for the prevention and treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infections. It is composed of standardized alkaline extracts from 21 strains of eight common respiratory bacterial species, including *Haemophilus influenzae*, *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, and *Moraxella catarrhalis*. The drug functions as an immunostimulant by interacting with Toll-like receptors (TLRs) on gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) after oral ingestion. This interaction triggers the maturation of dendritic cells, increases the production of secretory IgA in the respiratory mucosa, and modulates the Th1/Th2 balance, thereby enhancing the host's defense mechanisms against both viral and bacterial pathogens. It is widely approved for use in both pediatric and adult populations to reduce the frequency and severity of acute exacerbations in chronic bronchitis and recurrent infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract.
