Overview

ombitasvir + paritaprevir + ritonavir + dasabuvir + ribavirin is an all-oral combination antiviral regimen primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Marketed by AbbVie as Viekira Pak (when co-packaged without ribavirin), the regimen includes ombitasvir (an NS5A inhibitor), paritaprevir (an NS3/4A protease inhibitor), ritonavir (a CYP3A4 inhibitor used to boost paritaprevir levels), and dasabuvir (a non-nucleoside NS5B palm polymerase inhibitor). Ribavirin, a nucleoside analogue, is added to the regimen for specific patient populations, such as those with cirrhosis or genotype 1a infection, to improve cure rates. The regimen was FDA-approved in December 2014 but was discontinued in the United States in 2020 following the emergence of more effective, pangenotypic treatments with fewer side effects and lower pill burdens. Kaiser Permanente conducted significant Phase IV real-world studies to evaluate the effectiveness and patient-reported outcomes of this regimen in clinical practice.
