Omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids primarily found in marine sources such as fish oil. They are essential nutrients involved in numerous physiological processes including anti-inflammatory effects and regulation of lipid metabolism. Prescription formulations containing both EPA and DHA are used as adjuncts to diet for the treatment of severe hypertriglyceridemia in adults. The mechanism of action involves decreasing hepatic production of triglycerides and other fats by reducing substrate availability and modulating gene expression related to lipid metabolism. Omega-3 EPA/DHA also have antiplatelet effects, reduce blood pressure modestly, lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and may provide benefits in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis[1][2][5][10].
