Overview

Omega 3 fatty acid + gabapentin refers to a comparative clinical trial context rather than a single fixed-dose combination product. In a randomized, crossover trial conducted by Ain Shams University (NCT06190132), these two agents were evaluated for the treatment of uremic pruritus in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce pruritus by lowering levels of inflammatory mediators such as Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Gabapentin is a small-molecule anticonvulsant and analgesic that modulates the alpha-2-delta-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, which is thought to inhibit the transmission of neuropathic itch signals in the central nervous system. The trial results indicated that both treatments significantly reduced itch scores on the 5-D itch scale, with omega-3 fatty acids demonstrating a more pronounced reduction in PGE2 levels compared to gabapentin.
