Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (W-3 PUFAs) are a class of essential fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), known for their potent anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties. In the PROTEICA clinical trial (NCT02708771) sponsored by Hospital San Juan de la Cruz, high-dose omega-3 (4 g daily) was evaluated as a pharmacological intervention for patients with acute heart failure (AHF) presenting with hypoalbuminemia and high inflammatory activity. The treatment aims to modulate systemic inflammatory pathways, potentially reducing C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and improving serum albumin concentrations, which are often suppressed during acute inflammatory states in heart failure patients.
