Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which serve as precursors for anti-inflammatory eicosanoids and specialized pro-resolving mediators. In a clinical trial conducted by the Coordinación de Investigación en Salud at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Mexico, a daily dose of 2.4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids (Zonelabs) was investigated for its potential to reduce oxidative stress in HIV-seropositive patients undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The study specifically targeted markers such as nitric oxide catabolites, lipoperoxides, and glutathione. While the intervention successfully reduced serum triglyceride levels, it did not show a significant effect on the primary oxidative stress endpoints compared to placebo.
