Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) primarily derived from fish oil. In a clinical trial led by Dr. Timothy Wilens at Massachusetts General Hospital, omega-3 supplementation was evaluated as an adjunctive therapy to stimulant medications for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR). These lipids are thought to exert therapeutic effects by modulating cell membrane fluidity, influencing neurotransmitter systems (such as dopamine and norepinephrine), and providing anti-inflammatory properties. The MGH study specifically investigated whether high-dose EPA could alleviate emotional dysregulation symptoms that persist despite standard ADHD treatment.
