omega-3 fatty acids (SickKids)

Omega Pure is an omega-3 fatty acid supplement consisting of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It was evaluated as an investigational therapy in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00691288) sponsored by The Hospital for Sick Children for the management of hypertriglyceridemia in pediatric patients with HIV who are undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The mechanism of action involves the reduction of hepatic triglyceride synthesis, likely through the inhibition of enzymes such as diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase and the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), which enhances fatty acid oxidation and triglyceride clearance via lipoprotein lipase activation.
