Omega-3 fatty acids + omega-6 fatty acids is a combination of two classes of essential polyunsaturated fats. Omega-3s (such as EPA and DHA) are primarily found in fish oils and some plant sources, while omega-6s (such as linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid) are mainly derived from vegetable oils. Both types are considered essential because the human body cannot synthesize them; they must be obtained through diet or supplementation. This combination is often marketed as a dietary supplement to support cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, improve lipid profiles (notably by lowering triglycerides), support brain function, skin health, and potentially modulate immune responses[2][4][8]. The mechanism of action involves incorporation into cell membranes where they influence membrane fluidity and serve as precursors for bioactive lipid mediators such as eicosanoids (prostaglandins, leukotrienes). Omega-3s generally have anti-inflammatory effects while certain omega-6 derivatives can be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory depending on context[4][10]. Combined supplements aim to provide these fats in ratios that may optimize their physiological benefits.
