omega-3 fatty acids + vitamin E (Cairo University) is a combination nutraceutical product being evaluated for the treatment of mastalgia (breast pain) associated with fibrocystic breast changes. The combination consists of 1000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (containing eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) and 400 IU of Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol). Omega-3 fatty acids exert anti-inflammatory effects by serving as alternative substrates for cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Vitamin E acts as a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting breast tissue from oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of fibrocystic changes. This combination is currently in Phase 4 clinical development at Cairo University to determine its efficacy in reducing breast pain intensity compared to Vitamin E monotherapy.
