Overview

Omeprazole + pantoprazole is a combination of two proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), each used individually to reduce gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (the gastric proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach. Both drugs are benzimidazole derivatives and act as small molecule inhibitors, leading to suppression of both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. They are primarily indicated for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, and hypersecretory disorders like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole is also approved for Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens and reduction of upper GI bleeding risk in critically ill patients[2][5][6]. Pantoprazole can be administered intravenously or orally, while omeprazole is available over-the-counter[2]. The combination itself is not standard clinical practice due to overlapping mechanisms; co-administration does not provide additional benefit but may increase adverse effects[2].
