Overview
Omeprazole + sodium bicarbonate is an oral pharmaceutical combination used to treat conditions associated with excessive stomach acid, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and for the prevention of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill patients. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by irreversibly inhibiting the Gastric H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system on gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion. Sodium bicarbonate acts as an antacid by neutralizing existing stomach acid and also serves to protect omeprazole from degradation by stomach acid before absorption[1][2][3][4][5]. The combination allows for rapid onset of action compared to omeprazole alone[7].
