Overview

Ondansetron + hyaluronidase is a combination of two agents used to facilitate subcutaneous administration of ondansetron, an antiemetic. Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance that can trigger nausea and vomiting, particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery[1][3]. Hyaluronidase (specifically recombinant human hyaluronidase PH20) acts as an enzyme that temporarily increases tissue permeability by depolymerizing hyaluronic acid in the extracellular matrix. This allows for enhanced dispersion and absorption of co-administered drugs when given subcutaneously[2][5]. The combination enables effective systemic delivery of ondansetron via the subcutaneous route with pharmacokinetics similar to intravenous or intramuscular administration and is generally well-tolerated[2][5].
