Overview

Ondansetron + sufentanil is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together, typically in perioperative or anesthesia settings. Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Sufentanil is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia as well as management of severe acute pain. The combination may be employed to provide both effective analgesia (from sufentanil) and prophylaxis against opioid-induced or postoperative nausea/vomiting (from ondansetron). There are no fixed-dose combination products; rather, these drugs are co-administered based on clinical need[1][5][6][7]. Mechanistically, ondansetron blocks serotonin-mediated emetogenic signals at 5-HT3 receptors in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, while sufentanil acts as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors to produce analgesia[1][5].
