Optimel Manuka+

Optimel Manuka+ is a proprietary ophthalmic solution formulated for the management of dry eye symptoms, including sore and irritated eyes and eyelids. The product contains pharmaceutical-grade Leptospermum spp. (Manuka) honey (165 mg/g) as an excipient and glycerin 0.2% as the active ingredient, functioning primarily as a lubricant to relieve dryness and irritation of the eye[4][7][9]. The mechanism of action involves both lubrication from glycerin and antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory effects attributed to medical-grade Manuka honey. The honey component helps reduce bacterial colonization on the eyelid margin, which can contribute to inflammation, poor tear quality, and ocular surface damage in conditions such as tear deficiency or meibomian gland disease[1][5][7]. Clinical studies have shown that application reduces colony-forming units (CFUs) on the eyelids, potentially lowering susceptibility to bacterial conjunctivitis or keratitis while improving dry eye symptoms by reducing bacterial lipase production that disrupts meibomian gland lipids[1][5]. Developed for adjunctive use alongside good eyelid hygiene practices. Adverse effects are generally limited to transient stinging or redness; no serious adverse events have been reported[1][5][7].
