Optive and Systane are two distinct brands of over-the-counter (OTC) lubricant eye drops, also known as artificial tears, used for the symptomatic relief of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Optive, developed by Allergan (now part of AbbVie), is a dual-action formula containing carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) and glycerin; it acts as a lubricant and osmoprotectant to stabilize the tear film and protect the ocular surface. Systane, developed by Alcon, is typically formulated with polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol, utilizing a unique hydroxypropyl guar (HP-guar) gelling system that forms a protective matrix on the eye surface upon contact with tears.
