Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Optive + Systane is a non-standard combination referring to the concurrent or sequential use of two over-the-counter artificial tear products, "Optive" (by Allergan) and "Systane" (by Alcon), both designed for the relief of dry eye symptoms. These are not co-formulated in a single product but are sometimes used together by patients seeking combined benefits from their different ingredient profiles. - **Optive** products typically contain carboxymethylcellulose sodium as a lubricant, along with osmoprotectants such as L-carnitine and erythritol, which help protect corneal epithelial cells from hyperosmolar stress[8]. - **Systane** products (such as Systane Ultra or Systane Balance) use polyethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol as lubricants, with hydroxypropyl guar acting as a gelling agent to increase retention time on the ocular surface[1][4][5]. Some formulations also include mineral oil or phospholipids for lipid layer support[7]. Both brands act primarily by supplementing the tear film to relieve dryness and irritation; they do not have pharmacological activity beyond lubrication and osmoprotection.
