Overview

This entry refers to the combination of an oral contraceptive (a medication used for birth control, typically containing estrogen and/or progestin) with sotagliflozin, a dual inhibitor of sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) and 2 (SGLT2). Sotagliflozin is an orally administered small molecule approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure, and urgent visits for heart failure in adults with heart failure or type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronic kidney disease and other cardiovascular risk factors. It works by inhibiting SGLT1 in the intestine—delaying glucose absorption—and SGLT2 in the kidney—reducing renal glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion[3][6][7]. Oral contraceptives act primarily by suppressing ovulation through modulation of hormone receptors. There is no fixed-dose combination product containing both an oral contraceptive and sotagliflozin; this entry describes their concurrent use.
