Overview

Oral GLP-1 (7-36 amide) is an oral formulation of the endogenous human incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-36 amide) developed using Emisphere Technologies' Eligen delivery system. This system utilizes the absorption enhancer sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate (SNAC) to facilitate the transport of the peptide across the gastric mucosa, protecting it from degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) and allowing for systemic absorption. Developed in collaboration with University Hospital Basel, the drug acts as a Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. It has been investigated in Phase 1 trials for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, demonstrating dose-dependent increases in plasma concentrations and potent effects on insulin release and food intake reduction.
