Overview

Oseltamivir + zanamivir is a combination of two antiviral drugs, both classified as neuraminidase inhibitors, used primarily for the treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections. Oseltamivir (marketed as Tamiflu) is an oral prodrug that is converted in the body to its active form, which selectively inhibits influenza virus neuraminidase enzymes. Zanamivir (marketed as Relenza) is administered by inhalation and also inhibits viral neuraminidase but binds differently within the enzyme's active site compared to oseltamivir. Both drugs prevent the release of new viral particles from infected cells, thereby limiting the spread of infection. Combination therapy with these agents has been studied for its potential to suppress drug-resistant strains of influenza and prevent resistance emergence due to their distinct binding interactions with neuraminidase[1][2][4]. However, clinical studies have shown mixed results regarding efficacy compared to monotherapy[5].
