The treatment is designed for patients with non-resectable liver metastases from breast cancer. The regimen involves the intrahepatic (hepatic arterial) administration of oxaliplatin, a platinum-based antineoplastic agent that forms DNA crosslinks to inhibit replication and transcription. This is combined with systemic administration of capecitabine, a fluoropyrimidine carbamate prodrug that is converted to 5-fluorouracil, which inhibits thymidylate synthase. For patients with HER2-positive tumors, the regimen also includes systemic trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). The trial specifically evaluated the efficacy of alternating intrahepatic and systemic therapy to manage liver-dominant metastatic disease.
