Overview

oxaliplatin + docetaxel is a combination chemotherapy regimen investigated by the University of Pittsburgh for the treatment of androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC). Oxaliplatin is a third-generation platinum-based antineoplastic agent that functions as a DNA alkylator, forming intra- and inter-strand DNA cross-links that inhibit DNA replication and transcription, ultimately leading to cell death. Docetaxel (marketed as Taxotere) is a taxane that acts as a microtubule stabilizer; it binds to tubulin, promoting its assembly into stable microtubules and inhibiting their disassembly, which arrests the cell cycle in the G2/M phase and induces apoptosis. This combination was specifically evaluated in Phase II clinical trials for patients with metastatic prostate cancer who had failed prior cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens.
