Oxybuprocaine + cetylpyridinium chloride is a fixed-dose combination of an ester-type local anesthetic and a quaternary ammonium antiseptic used for symptomatic treatment of infectious and inflammatory conditions of the mouth and throat and as a local oropharyngeal anesthetic-antiseptic combination. Oxybuprocaine (benoxinate) is a synthetic surface anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory nerve fibers, stabilizing neuronal membranes and reversibly inhibiting initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby producing rapid-onset local anesthesia of mucosal surfaces.[4][7] Cetylpyridinium chloride is a cationic surfactant antiseptic that binds to microbial cell membranes, disrupts membrane integrity, and inhibits bacterial metabolism and growth, leading to broad-spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal activity and reduction of dental plaque and gingival inflammation.[1][6][9] Together, the combination provides local pain relief and antimicrobial action in the oropharyngeal cavity, typically formulated as buccal or chewable tablets or topical throat preparations.
