Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oxybutynin is a synthetic muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist used for the treatment of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. DR-3001 is a specific sustained-release vaginal ring formulation developed by Duramed Research (a subsidiary of Teva). The vaginal route of administration was designed to provide continuous, controlled release of the drug, bypassing hepatic first-pass metabolism. This bypass is intended to reduce the formation of the metabolite N-desethyloxybutynin, which is primarily responsible for the common anticholinergic side effects associated with oral oxybutynin, such as xerostomia (dry mouth). Clinical development of the DR-3001 vaginal ring reached Phase 3 trials, but the product was ultimately not commercialized.
