Overview

Oxybutynin is a small molecule antimuscarinic agent used for the treatment of overactive bladder and neurogenic detrusor overactivity. It functions as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (M1, M2, and M3) located on the detrusor muscle of the bladder, which inhibits involuntary bladder contractions and increases bladder capacity. The transdermal system (patch), developed by Watson Pharmaceuticals (now part of Teva), provides a sustained release of the drug over several days. This delivery method bypasses first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby reducing the levels of the metabolite N-desethyloxybutynin, which is primarily responsible for common anticholinergic side effects like dry mouth and constipation. The specific Phase 4 study mentioned evaluated the safety and efficacy of this transdermal system in pediatric patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity.
