Overview

Oxycodone + midazolam is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used primarily in procedural sedation and anesthesia. Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic that acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, providing pain relief by altering the perception and response to pain in the central nervous system. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, producing sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic, and muscle relaxant effects. This combination has been studied for use during procedures such as endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS), where it can provide effective sedation and analgesia with potentially fewer episodes of hypoxia compared to other opioid/benzodiazepine combinations[1][4]. However, concurrent use increases the risk of profound sedation and respiratory depression due to additive central nervous system depressant effects[4].
