Overview

Oxycodone + propofol is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together primarily for procedural sedation and anesthesia. Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic that acts mainly as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, providing potent pain relief and some suppression of visceral pain and cough reflex. Propofol is a short-acting sedative-hypnotic agent that induces anesthesia by potentiating the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, resulting in rapid onset of sedation or hypnosis. The combination has been studied for use in procedures such as painless gastroscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), where it can provide effective sedation with reduced doses of propofol, improved hemodynamic stability, fewer adverse effects compared to other opioid combinations, and enhanced patient satisfaction[1][2][4]. This regimen leverages the synergistic effects of both drugs to optimize procedural comfort while minimizing risks associated with higher doses of either agent alone.
