Overview

Geonistin is a combination vaginal tablet containing the broad-spectrum antibiotic oxytetracycline and the antifungal nystatin. Developed by PLIVA Croatia, it is indicated for the treatment of unspecific and mixed vulvovaginal infections characterized by pathological discharge, as well as for prophylaxis following gynecological procedures to prevent bacterial and fungal superinfections. Oxytetracycline acts as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, while nystatin exerts fungistatic and fungicidal activity by targeting fungal cell membranes, particularly those of Candida species. A Phase 4 study (GENIE) demonstrated its clinical effectiveness and microbiological cure rate in adult women, confirming its utility in managing mixed vaginal mucosal inflammations.
