Ozone-enriched cardioplegia is an experimental cardioprotective combination therapy being investigated by Assiut University for use in adult cardiac surgery, specifically for patients with ischemic heart disease undergoing elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The intervention involves the addition of medical-grade ozone (O3) to a standard cold blood cardioplegic solution, such as Thomsons cardioplegia. This combination is designed to induce elective cardiac arrest while simultaneously mitigating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Ozone is hypothesized to act by modulating the systemic inflammatory response and oxidative stress, as evidenced by changes in markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and troponin levels, ultimately aiming to improve post-operative myocardial recovery, reduce the incidence of dysrhythmias, and decrease the need for inotropic support.
