Overview

Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive gas used in medical therapy for its potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. In the clinical trial conducted by Tanta University for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), medical ozone is administered via a single local injection into the carpal tunnel, often in combination with lidocaine to mitigate procedural pain. The therapeutic effect of ozone in CTS is attributed to its ability to reduce perineural edema, inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-1), and improve oxygen delivery to the ischemic median nerve. This treatment aims to provide long-term symptomatic relief and improve functional outcomes in patients with mild-to-moderate CTS.
