Overview
p-Menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) is an organic compound classified as a diol and a terpenoid. It is a colorless substance with a structure similar to menthol, providing a cooling feel. PMD is the active ingredient in certain insect repellents, effective against mosquitoes, ticks, flies, biting midges, blackflies, and other insects. It can be derived naturally from the essential oil of Corymbia citriodora (formerly known as Eucalyptus citriodora) leaves or synthesized from citronellal. Natural oil of lemon eucalyptus contains only 1-2% PMD, while refined oil can contain up to 70% PMD. Studies have shown PMD to be as effective as DEET when used in similar quantities.
