Overview

This combination chemotherapy regimen, consisting of paclitaxel, estramustine, and carboplatin, was evaluated by SCRI Development Innovations, LLC for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), also known as hormone-refractory prostate cancer. Paclitaxel is a taxane that stabilizes microtubules, preventing cell division and inducing apoptosis. Estramustine is a conjugate of estradiol and nitrogen mustard that interferes with microtubule dynamics by binding to microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). Carboplatin is a platinum-based antineoplastic agent that induces DNA cross-linking, inhibiting DNA synthesis and transcription. The regimen was specifically investigated in a Phase II trial to optimize the dosing and schedule of carboplatin when administered alongside weekly paclitaxel and low-dose estramustine to improve efficacy and reduce toxicity in advanced prostate cancer patients.
