Overview

This combination therapy regimen, investigated by the University of Washington, is designed for the treatment of metastatic (Stage IV) breast cancer. It consists of two microtubule-targeting agents, paclitaxel and vinorelbine, which exert synergistic cytotoxic effects by stabilizing and inhibiting the polymerization of tubulin, respectively. For patients with HER2-overexpressing tumors, the regimen includes trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 receptor to inhibit tumor cell proliferation. Filgrastim (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor or G-CSF) is integrated into the protocol as supportive care to stimulate neutrophil production and mitigate the risk of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. This specific combination was evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial to determine optimal dosing, safety profiles, and therapeutic efficacy in prolonging survival for patients with advanced breast cancer.
