Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) and Borneolum (Bingpian) are traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients frequently used in combination, particularly in patent medicines such as Fufang Danshen Dripping Pill and Danqi Pill. Panax notoginseng is the dried root of a plant known for its hemostatic properties—stopping internal and external bleeding—and is widely used to treat cardiovascular diseases by invigorating blood circulation, supplementing blood, protecting the myocardium, and improving ischemia/reperfusion injury. Its active constituents include ginsenosides, notoginsenosides, flavonoids, volatile oils, amino acids, and polysaccharides. Borneolum (Bingpian) contains monoterpenoid compounds and is often included in herbal formulas to enhance absorption or synergize effects. The combination is primarily indicated for cardiovascular conditions such as angina pectoris and chronic heart failure; it may also be used for stroke recovery or intracranial hemorrhage according to some clinical studies. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways including vasodilation (improving blood flow), antithrombotic activity (reducing clot formation), neuroprotection, anti-inflammatory effects, myocardial protection during ischemic events, as well as possible estrogen-like activity from Panax notoginseng[1][2][3][5].
