Pancreatic islets (University Hospital, Lille) is a cell therapy developed for the treatment of severe type 1 diabetes (T1D). The therapy consists of insulin-producing beta cells isolated from deceased donor pancreata. Following the Edmonton protocol, these islets are sequentially infused into the recipient's portal vein to restore endogenous insulin production and physiological glucose sensing. This approach aims to eliminate the need for exogenous insulin therapy and prevent severe hypoglycemic episodes in patients with brittle diabetes. The transplantation procedure is supported by a steroid-free immunosuppressive regimen, typically involving daclizumab for induction and a combination of sirolimus and tacrolimus for maintenance, to prevent graft rejection and preserve islet function.
