Overview

Pancrecarb (DCI-1020) is a porcine-derived pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) developed by Digestive Care, Inc. for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). It contains a mixture of lipase, amylase, and protease, which are essential for the digestion of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. The drug is uniquely formulated as bicarbonate-buffered, enteric-coated microspheres within a capsule. This design protects the enzymes from degradation by gastric acid in the stomach and ensures their release in the duodenum, where the pH is more alkaline, thereby mimicking the natural physiological delivery of pancreatic enzymes. Pancrecarb is indicated for patients with EPI due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or other conditions, and has been specifically studied in pediatric populations to ensure safety and efficacy in infants and young children.
